Cloudflare Acquires Astro — Why This Matters for AI Search

What happened

In January 2026, Cloudflare acquired Astro, the open-source web framework. All Astro employees are now Cloudflare employees. Astro remains open-source under the MIT licence, and the project continues to operate as an independent framework within Cloudflare's ecosystem.

Why this matters for AI search

The acquisition introduced several features that directly affect AI search visibility:

Markdown for Agents. This is the headline feature. Astro sites deployed on Cloudflare can now automatically generate markdown-optimised versions of every page, specifically formatted for AI crawlers.
