What is IndexNow and Should I Implement It?
IndexNow is a protocol for instant Bing indexing. Since ChatGPT uses Bing exclusively, IndexNow means near-instant ChatGPT eligibility when you publish or update content. It's free, supported by major platforms, and takes minutes to set up.
IndexNow is a protocol that tells search engines instantly when you publish or update a page. It's supported by Bing, Yandex, and others. Since ChatGPT indexes exclusively from Bing, implementing IndexNow means your new and updated content becomes eligible for ChatGPT citation within minutes rather than days. It's free, and Astro supports it natively.
How IndexNow works
Without IndexNow, search engines discover your content changes through periodic crawling — Bing might not notice an update for days or weeks. With IndexNow, you proactively notify Bing the moment you publish or update a page.
The process:
- You publish or update a page on your site
- Your site sends a ping to the IndexNow API with the updated URL
- Bing receives the notification and re-crawls that page immediately
- The updated content enters Bing's index within minutes
- ChatGPT can now access the updated version
Why it matters for AI search
76% of pages cited by AI engines were updated within 30 days. Freshness is a core citation signal. But freshness only counts if search engines know about your update. Without IndexNow, there's a lag between publishing and indexing — meaning your fresh content sits invisible during the period when its freshness advantage is strongest.
| Scenario | Time to Bing Index | Time to ChatGPT Eligibility |
|---|---|---|
| No Bing submission | Weeks or never | Never |
| Sitemap submitted, no IndexNow | 1-7 days | 1-7 days after indexing |
| IndexNow implemented | Minutes | Minutes after indexing |
Who supports IndexNow
IndexNow is supported by:
- Bing — primary beneficiary for ChatGPT visibility
- Yandex — Russia's largest search engine
- Naver — South Korea's largest search engine
- Sezn.am — Czech search engine
Google does not currently support IndexNow, but Google has its own Indexing API. For AI search purposes, the Bing integration is the critical one.
How to implement IndexNow
Option 1: CMS plugin
WordPress, Wix, and other major CMS platforms have IndexNow plugins available. Install, configure your API key, and it handles pings automatically.
Option 2: Manual implementation
- Generate an API key — any string of 8+ hexadecimal characters
- Host the key file — place a text file at
yoursite.com/{your-key}.txtcontaining just the key - Send pings — make a GET or POST request to
https://api.indexnow.org/indexnow?url={your-url}&key={your-key}
Option 3: Astro integration
If you're using Astro (like this site), you can add IndexNow support through a post-build script that pings Bing whenever pages are generated. The Astro ecosystem has community integrations available.
Should you implement it?
Yes. There is no downside. It's free, takes minutes to set up, and removes the indexing lag that could cost you AI citations. If you publish content regularly and want ChatGPT to see it quickly, IndexNow is essential.
