ChatGPT accounts for 87.4% of all AI referral traffic to websites, according to Conductor's analysis of 13,770 domains across 100 million citations (May to September 2025). It is by a wide margin the largest single AI referrer. The most direct optimisation action is getting your site indexed in Bing, which ChatGPT search draws on. The referral traffic breakdown

Multiple AI search platforms compete for users. But ChatGPT dominates actual referral traffic. It sends the most visitors to external websites. The concentration is striking:

PlatformShare of AI Referral TrafficGrowth Trend
ChatGPT87.4%Dominant, growing
PerplexitySecond largestGrowing
Other AI (Gemini, Claude, Copilot)RemainderFragmented

The 87.4% figure is the share of AI referral visits, from Conductor's 13,770-domain dataset. ChatGPT is followed by Perplexity, with Gemini, Claude, and Copilot making up a smaller, fragmented remainder. AI referral traffic overall still accounts for only around 1% of all website visits in that dataset, so this is a fast-growing but still small channel.

The conversion advantage

AI referral traffic does not just arrive in greater volume from ChatGPT. Semrush research published in 2025 found AI search traffic converting at roughly 4.4x the rate of standard organic search for informational and marketing queries. Users who click through from an AI response are often investigating a recommendation rather than browsing, which lifts intent. (See AI search conversion rates for the sourced detail.)

Higher conversion alongside fast growth is a rare combination. For many businesses, optimising for ChatGPT citations is a sensible first priority given ChatGPT's referral share.

Why ChatGPT dominates

Several factors explain the 87.4% concentration. First, ChatGPT has the largest user base of any AI assistant, so it has the most opportunities to refer. Second, ChatGPT search includes clickable source links in its responses, encouraging click-throughs. Third, its integration with Bing gives it a broad index of web content to reference.

As ChatGPT adds browsing and real-time search features, its share of referral traffic has continued to grow rather than plateau.

What this means for your strategy

The data is clear: if you optimise for one AI platform, make it ChatGPT. The single most impactful action is getting indexed in Bing (IndexNow speeds this up), since ChatGPT search pulls from the Bing index. Pair that with clear answer-first content, Organisation schema, and regular updates.

Do not ignore other platforms. Perplexity has a better crawl-to-referral ratio, meaning each visit from Perplexity is more efficiently earned. But for raw volume and conversion value, ChatGPT is the clear priority. See the full AI search market share data for more context.
