The median minimum contract across the 12 UK SEO and AI search agencies in the SEOCompare verified database is 4.5 months (mean 5). Only 1 of 12 (8%) requires a 12-month minimum, so a 12-month lock-in is the exception in this market, not the norm. 3 of 12 agencies (25%) run a proprietary platform, which can act as a second, softer lock-in if your data or optimisation history lives inside it. Industry surveys often describe 12 months as the standard SEO contract (the third-party benchmarks page carries that DMA finding). This first-party panel of agencies that actually rank for AI SEO buying queries shows shorter minimums are now the competitive norm: 6 of 12 start at 3 months.

Why a proprietary tool counts toward lock-in

A proprietary platform is not a red flag by itself; the 3 panel agencies that run one (Found: Everysearch / Luminr; Screaming Frog: Screaming Frog SEO Spider, Log File Analyser; Rank4AI: AI visibility audit + citation tracker) use them as genuine delivery tooling. The lock-in risk is contractual: if your tracking history, content, schema or reporting lives only inside the agency's platform, leaving means starting that record from zero. Before signing, ask what you keep on exit, in what format, and at what cost. The red-flag checker includes this as a scored question.

Methodology

Sample: the same 12-agency panel as the pricing index: UK SEO and AI search agencies appearing in the top 3 of Google UK for AI SEO buying queries, recorded in the SEOCompare verified database (compiled 2026-04-26). Sample size is stated on every figure.

Measures: minimum initial contract length in months (published terms or directly verified) and whether the agency operates a named proprietary platform. Medians and counts over real rows; nothing is modelled. Auto-renewal clauses, notice periods and early-termination fees are not yet recorded fields; they are on the roadmap and will be added as audited columns, not estimates.

Limitations: minimums are entry terms; negotiated enterprise deals can differ. The panel is the buyer-visible end of the UK market (agencies ranking for the buying queries), not the whole market. Proprietary-tool lock-in depends on each contract's exit terms, which this index flags but cannot read for you.

Independence and disclosure: no paid placement. SEOCompare has a commercial relationship with Rank4AI, one of the 12 panel agencies; its contract terms are recorded and scored identically to every other agency. See how we are funded.

The case for a longer contract
“A short minimum is buyer-friendly, but it is not automatically the right buy. AI search optimisation compounds: schema, entity work and citations build over quarters, and an agency on a rolling 3-month deal has a rational incentive to chase quick, visible wins over slower structural work. A 6-month term with a clear 90-day review gate is often a better-aligned deal than the shortest contract on the table. Judge the exit terms, not just the length.”

Common questions

Is a 12-month minimum contract normal for UK SEO agencies?

Not in this panel. Only 1 of the 12 verified agencies (8%) requires 12 months (Rise at Seven). The median minimum is 4.5 months, and 6 of 12 agencies start at 3 months. Treat a demanded 12-month lock-in as something to question, not a market standard you must accept.

What should I check before accepting any minimum term?

Four things: the notice period after the minimum, whether the contract auto-renews into another fixed term, any early-termination fee, and what you keep on exit (content, schema, reporting history, tool data). Ask for each in writing. The agency red-flag checker turns these into a scored checklist.

How often is this index updated?

Figures recompute whenever the underlying database changes, with a dated snapshot recorded monthly alongside the pricing index. Current figures were last updated on 11 June 2026 from a panel of 12 agencies.
